Principal's Message

Welcome to the Term 4 St Mary's College newsletter...

Dear Families, friends and extended St Mary's community,

As we commence the season of Advent and the close of another year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the spirit of hope and joy that fills our school community. Advent is a time of preparation, anticipation, and reflection, and it reminds us of the importance of faith, kindness, and togetherness. We are truly blessed to work alongside such a dedicated group of students, families, and staff.

Advent Message

In this season of Advent, we celebrate the light of hope that comes into the world with the birth of Christ. This time offers us a chance to pause, reflect, and prepare our hearts for the promise of peace and joy. It’s a season of waiting, but also one of action—of giving, of caring for one another, and of spreading kindness. I encourage each of us to take time in the coming weeks to reflect on the blessings in our lives and to be a source of light and encouragement to others.

      Shrine Of Remembrance

On Wednesday 10th of October, students in grades 5/6 took part in a day of remembering the fallen at The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. Students engaged in a guided tour, learning about the various tours of duty undertaken by the soldiers of Melbourne.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the different equipment used, mateship and sacrifices experienced by those who served our country. To finish their experience, students participated in a scavenger hunt, exploring the various memorials and statuses within the grounds.

      Lest We Forget.

      The Chocolate Shop Incursion

On the 9th of October, Prep and Grade 1-2 students embarked on a mouthwatering journey with The Chocolate Shop! This exciting half-day incursion provided students with the opportunity to team up and explore the art of making their very own hot chocolate creations.

Students worked in teams to craft and customise their designs and created a unique hot chocolate concoction to take home. The experience allowed students to build essential skills in creativity, collaboration and communication while having fun!

      Prep Inquiry

The Inquiry topic for this term in the Prep classroom was all around Physical Science. The students were engaged in some investigations and a ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ experiment.

Students had to investigate which objects will roll down a ramp and how different materials impact this action. We looked at how objects roll and slide.

      George’s Marvellous Medicine

During Term 4 our students are exploring the novel ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. Our students are learning new vocabulary from the novel and focusing on reading comprehension.

During the unit the students were very mischievous when creating their own Marvellous Medicine using everyday household items just like George did for his grouchy, grumpy, Grandmother Kranky!

The students shared their personal experiences, including the devices they used to help them access hearing, the adjustments and technology they access at school, and the adjustments they make every day to allow them to be active community members.

Our students then bravely, worked with small groups of children to teach them some Auslan, including numbers, alphabet, emotions and colours. It was a wonderful experience for our students to celebrate their deafness and spread more knowledge and awareness among their peers.

During the 5/6 Expanded Learning Program, students participated in a unit focused on health and hygiene. They explored a variety of hygiene items and learned to categorise them into groups such as oral health, sleep hygiene, healthy food, hydration, and cleanliness.

To enhance their understanding of the importance of handwashing, the children conducted an experiment to investigate the impact of germs. They rubbed a piece of bread on various surfaces they believed to be the germiest. The goal was to hypothesise which areas would show the most bacterial growth. After a period of observation, the bread that developed the most mould indicated the surfaces with the highest germ exposure.

This hands-on activity helped students appreciate the significance of proper handwashing techniques.

The recommendations will be used to inform future strategic direction and our next 4-year School Improvement Plan. The following strengths of the school were highlights of the review:

        • Strong strategic vision for the future and instructional leadership that models and pursues best practice in DHH education.
        • Staff know students and collaborate closely with families.
        • Staff expertise and commitment to DHH students and their needs is exemplary.
        • The quality of Tier 3 teaching strategies and liaison with partner schools in addressing the needs of DHH students.
        • The commitment to wellbeing and its expression through the four Dominican pillars is at the core of all the college does.
        • The range of support available to students through various allied health providers that work closely with SMC

Opportunities for improvement including creating stronger collaboration with our partner schools and building greater capacity within our students to develop confidence and persistence in their learning will be explored as we build a plan for the next 4-year cycle.

          Pen Pals

          Connecting with the wider community

In Term 2, our student leaders were busy writing letters to the students at Hearing and Beyond, a school for the deaf in Vietnam, with the aim of starting a pen pal program.

This term, our students were excited to receive letters back from their pen pals. In their letters, the students at Hearing and Beyond introduced themselves and shared their excitement for their newly developed school building.

Now, our Student Leaders are responding and are excited about the new friendship that is blossoming between the two schools.

          Recognising Greatness

As we prepare to finish an enjoyable year of student leadership, our 2024 student leaders took the time to reflect on the challenges they faced, the growth they experienced and the achievements they celebrated throughout their journey.

The 2024 St Mary’s student leaders decided to write a letter to our 2025 St Mary’s student leaders. In their letters, the student leaders shared invaluable advice, encouragement, and lessons learned from their time in leadership. They have reminded us all that leadership is not just about the title; it’s about service, collaboration and creating positive change.

Thank you to Jack, Cleayra, Ira, Tanisha, Lianna and Rosetta for their dedication, perseverance and commitment to the role of student leadership this year.

          EXP Class

During Term 4, St Mary’s students are reading the book ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. We are learning new vocabulary that is in the text as well as developing our reading comprehension skills, such as making predictions, summarising and showing our knowledge of newly learned words in a variety of ways.

          SMC Students are Superstars!

At our Holy Trinity and St Mary’s assembly, three of our students were selected to receive some special awards to acknowledge their amazing efforts within the classroom and their ability to apply their values throughout the school day.

Sofia was awarded 'Student of the Week' for trying her best during Jump Rope for Heart.

Marcus received a 'Torch Award' for displaying respect by following directions.

Bailee was awarded 'Student of the Week' for her independence and self-motivation to learn and ask for help!

To support and consolidate her learning, she has enjoyed playing a snap game with the tricky words she’s been learning to remember.

          Deaf Awareness in the Community

On Monday 11th of November, three of our St. Mary’s students were invited to St. Francis de Sales Primary School to discuss deafness in the community.

          Personal Health and Hygiene

          Hampton Beach Excursion

On Friday, November 15th, the 5/6 students enjoyed a water safety excursion to Hampton Beach. They participated in a presentation and learned about rips, CPR, and how to contact emergency services when on the beach.
