Principal's Message September 2021

Welcome St Mary's College students, family and friends.

I would like to start by acknowledging the wonderful support of our parents and guardians in working with us to deliver another term of learning from home.

We are very aware of the multiple tasks our families are juggling on a daily basis including ensuring children are online, understanding what they are being asked to do for school and managing their disappointment in not being able to see friends in person.

New data from University of Melbourne

Some interesting and reassuring data that has recently come out of the University of Melbourne found that whilst Victorian children have spent more time learning from home than any other students, there is currently no evidence to suggest they have lost learning.

In fact, Victorian students have not only maintained their literacy and numeracy achievement, but NAPLAN results show they have done better in many areas than in other states. I believe the educational success of St Mary’s College students over the past 12 months is a result of strong home and school partnerships and the resilience and mindset for learning of our wonderful students.

Recognising our teachers and educational support staff

I would also like to recognise our teachers and educational support staff who have worked incredibly hard this term in constantly seeking new and better ways to support and engage your child in their learning.

We remain optimistic we will all be able to gather soon at our campuses but also recognise the importance of being able to be comfortable with uncertainty. Being okay with not knowing what’s around the corner is a great attitude we can pass on to our children that will support them in maintaining a positive attitude to learning and life.

Coming up...holiday break

As we move into the holiday break, I encourage all students to try and spend some time away from their computers, as learning from home is likely to continue at least partially into term 4. Please also spend time looking after yourselves and don’t hesitate to reach out to the school if you are experiencing any concerns about your child or their education under the current restrictions.
